General description
Vegitone Infusion Broth is like Brain Heart Infusion Broth with the difference that animal peptones are replaced by plant peptones. It is a highly nutritious and well-buffered medium that supports the growth of a wide variety of microorganisms. Peptone (vegetable), Vegetable Special Infusion powder, and Vegetable Infusion powder are non-animal nutritive sources of peptides and amino acids providing nitrogen for the growth of microorganisms. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate source, and sodium chloride is for the osmotic balance in the media. Disodium phosphate is used as the buffering agent. The addition of desired components allows the modification of this medium as per cultivation requirements. Sodium chloride (6.5 %) makes the medium selective for salt-tolerant bacteria like Enterococci. Adding agar (0.1 %) to the broth improves the growth of micro-aerophilic and anaerobic microorganisms. Enrichment with 10 % sheep blood allows isolation and cultivation of a wide variety of fungal species, including systemic fungi from clinical specimens. Additional gentamicin and/or chloramphenicol accommodate for selective isolation of these fungi.
